In a landmark event held on Thursday, November 13th, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Guwor Emomotimi Dennis, along with the 8th Assembly, hosted non-sitting members of the Delta State House of Assembly dating back to 1992. The event, held in Asaba, the state capital, was aimed at connecting the past and present, laying a stronger foundation for the future of legislative governance in the state.
Speaker Dennis emphasized the significant contributions of the first to seventh Assemblies in shaping Delta State’s democratic journey, acknowledging the unique challenges and triumphs of each. He highlighted the privileged of having His Excellency Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, the immediate past presiding officer of the seventh Assembly and current Governor of Delta State, as a testament to the legislature’s role as a nursery for democracy and good governance.
“The 8th Assembly recognizes the importance of preserving institutional memories for effective governance and lawmaking. The hosting of non-sitting members was designed to renew fellowship among legislators. The event’s theme, “Building harmonious consensus in the face of diverse, complex, and competing interests in the legislature for inclusive governance,” underscored the core principles of democracy.”
“While the second theme, “Managing the banana peels and booby traps in the legislature,” candidly acknowledged the realities of legislative life.”
