Bandits have killed a Community Health Officer (CHO), set ablaze a primary health centre and killed five others at Yarkatsinan Laka community in Bungudu Local Government of Zamfara State.
The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed that a large number of armed bandits, riding on over 50 motorcycles and carrying sophisticated weapons, invaded the Yarkatsinan Laka community.
A statement by the Command spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the Police Strike Unit responded swiftly and engaged the assailants in a gun duel, resulting in the neutralisation of 11 armed bandits, while several others escaped with gunshot injuries.
“Regrettably, during the exchange of fire, two police personnel and three civilians lost their lives.
“One police officer sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment and is responding positively,” DSP Yazid said.
DSP Yazid said normalcy has since been restored, urging members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information to enhance effective policing.
A younger brother of the deceased community health worker in charge of the Yarkatsinan Laka PHC, who pleaded anonymity, described the incident as a calamity to his family.
