The Delta State Police Command has arrested an officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, who allegedly shot and killed a suspect, Mene Ogidi, 28, in a viral video in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, showed the officer interrogating the suspect before opening fire, killing him on the spot.
The video also captured other operatives evacuating the body into a police Hilux van and leaving the scene.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Delta, Bright Edafe, in a statement on Tuesday, said the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the act as an extrajudicial killing.
He said the operatives were acting on intelligence when they arrested the suspect, who was allegedly caught attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
However, he noted that ASP Usman violated Force Order 237 and standard operational procedures by discharging his firearm, leading to the suspect’s death.
He said the officer has since been arrested, queried, and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for immediate disciplinary action and possible prosecution.
Oyeniyi reaffirmed the command’s zero tolerance for unlawful, reckless and extra-judicial conduct by officers, assuring that justice would be served.
He also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and said further steps are being taken to ensure accountability.
