The Delta State Government has commended communities that have agreed to partner with the state by making land available for developmental projects, describing the move as a major step towards tackling insecurity and accelerating economic growth in their areas.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, gave the commendation during a meeting with stakeholders from various communities. The meeting was attended by the Obi of Aboh Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Greg Oputa, alongside representatives of participating communities.
Dr. Emu said the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori remains committed to ensuring that development reaches every part of the state. He noted that one of the ways to achieve this objective is through collaboration between government and host communities in utilizing available land resources for productive ventures.
According to him, vast stretches of undeveloped land have, over time, become hideouts for criminal elements, thereby posing security challenges to both residents and government.
He explained that putting such lands to productive use would not only address security concerns but also attract investors to establish large-scale agricultural and other commercial ventures capable of transforming the local economy.
“The best way to address the growing security concerns associated with these idle lands is to open them up for productive investments. Large-scale agro-businesses and other development projects will create jobs, stimulate economic activities, and provide sustainable opportunities for the people,” he said.
The SSG further assured the communities that the government would continue to pursue policies and partnerships that promote inclusive growth, improve livelihoods, and unlock the economic potential of rural areas.
In his remarks, the Obi of Aboh Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Greg Oputa, commended the state government for the initiative, describing it as a visionary approach to community development.
He expressed the full support of the Aboh Kingdom for the partnership and pledged the cooperation of the people towards the successful implementation of the proposed projects.
Representatives of other participating communities also lauded the government for enlightening them on the economic value of their land resources and the benefits that could accrue from strategic investments in their areas.
They noted that the initiative would not only attract development but also create employment opportunities and improve the standard of living of residents.
Present during the engagement meeting included top government functionaries, and communities’ representatives such as Aboh, Uweru, Ugiliamai, Umuochem-Ossissa, Oloa-Ossissa, and Unenurhie.
