The Federal ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has commenced training of 30 sugarcane farmers to boost sugar production in the country.
Speaking at the 2-day capacity building for small holder Sugarcane farmers from North Central and Southern zones, in Ilorin Kwara state, the minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Muhammed Mahmood Abubakar noted that three persons each will benefit from the 10 participating states.
The minister said the idea is to enable sugarcane farmers have access to inputs to aid their production.
He said the federal government will support all farmers in the sector to attain their full potential.
Represented by the Assistant Chief Agric Officer from the ministry, Samaila Garba Shiko, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development noted that the programme will transform the country from sugar consuming nation to a supplier to other countries.
In her address, the Managing Director, Kwara state Agricultural Development Project, Dr Khadijat Ahmed said the state government has concluded plans to resuscitate the sugar factory in the state.
In his remark, the Chairman Sugarcane Farmers Association of Nigeria, Kwara state Chapter, Muhammed Ndako Shaaba called for the empowerment of out growers in sugarcane production to create more jobs.
