The Delta State Government has redeemed its ₦20 million pledge to Master Great Chiedu Okediachi, the state’s World Spelling Bee Champion, in recognition of his outstanding achievement and for bringing honour to Delta State and Nigeria.
The Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, presented the cheque to Master Great on behalf of the State Government at his office in Asaba on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
Ashibogwu said the gesture fulfilled the pledge made by the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who had earlier approved ₦40 million for the sponsorship of the spelling bee competition.
He explained that the Governor’s support went beyond financial commitment, noting that Governor Oborevwori personally encouraged and prayed for the success of Delta’s young participants, culminating in Master Great’s emergence as World Champion.
The Commissioner said the additional ₦20 million was approved to reward Master Great for his exceptional performance and inspire other students across the state to pursue excellence, hard work and global competitiveness.
He assured Master Great, his parents and the school that the Oborevwori administration would continue to support citizens and institutions whose achievements bring honour to Delta State and Nigeria.
Ashibogwu urged the young champion to see the award as a motivation for greater accomplishments, assuring him that the State Government’s support would not end with the presentation of the cheque.
He also commended the school for nurturing the young champion and urged other students to emulate his determination and excellence, while continuing to project the good name of their institution and the state.
In appreciation, Mr Andrew Okediachi, father of Master Great, expressed deep gratitude to Governor Oborevwori, the Delta State Government and the Ministry of Secondary Education for their support and recognition of his son’s achievement, describing the gesture as the beginning of greater things for the school, the state and his family.
Okediachi appealed for an opportunity for the family to personally appreciate the Governor and assured the government of their continued partnership. He prayed for God’s blessings upon the Governor, the Ministry, the school and everyone contributing to Master Great’s success.
