Godwill Akpabio, the senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district, has been declared the winner of the Senate Presidency election for the 10th National Assembly.
Akpabio defeated Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, the senator-elect for Zamfara West, in the race for the coveted position.
After an election by the 109 senators, he polled 63 to defeat Senator Yari, who scored 46.
Senator Ali Ndume nominated former Akwa Ibom governor, Akpabio, for the position of Senate President. Ndume provided a detailed biography of Akpabio to support his nomination.
Senator Ishaku Abbo nominated Senator Abdul Aziz Yari.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, had designated the South-South region as the rightful holder of the Senate President position in the 10th Assembly. Senator Godswill Akpabio is the party’s preferred candidate for the position.
Senator Jubrin Barau from the North West was nominated and adopted as the Deputy Senate President position.
The lawmakers were sworn in by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Magaji Tambuwal.
Inauguration of the two chambers of the 10th Assembly commenced with the election of their leaders concurrently.
