The 2023 Corps Members Employers Workshop kicked off with great enthusiasm as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Lagos state chapter convened government representatives, employers, stakeholders, and Corps Members under the theme, “Optimising the Productivity of Corps Members Through Enhanced Welfare and Security.”

The workshop, held in Rita Lori hotels Surulere Lagos, commenced with a warm welcome address by the Lagos State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, Mrs. Yetunde Abimbola Baderinwa who stressed the importance of the theme in ensuring the well-being and productivity of Corps Members. The coordinator emphasized the need for adaptability and evolution in the face of a changing world, and encouraged participants to actively engage in discussions and collaborations that would empower the Corps Members during their service year.
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), YD Ahmed, who was represented by Mr. Tota George, addressed the gathering with a keen focus on the significance of the workshop’s theme. He highlighted the meticulous selection of this year’s theme and expressed a strong desire for the forum to generate actionable solutions.

Mr. Tota George underscored the critical challenges that the NYSC program faces, such as the rapid decline in welfare provisions for Corps Members, consistent threats to their security, and even the connivance of some employers with Corps Members to engage in truancy.
These are just a few of the complex issues that need to be addressed and resolved for the program to remain effective and beneficial. The Director-General’s message served as a clarion call to the workshop’s participants, emphasizing the urgency of finding innovative and practical solutions to these pressing concerns. The forum was thus charged with the responsibility of crafting strategies and recommendations that would ultimately strengthen the NYSC program and better serve the interests and well-being of the dedicated Corps Members.
On his part , the Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board also addressed the gathering, highlighting the instrumental role the NYSC program has played in national development. He expressed the importance of understanding the needs and challenges of Corps Members to create an environment where they can excel and contribute effectively.
The Chairman called on all stakeholders to actively participate in discussions and collaborate on solutions that enhance the welfare and security of Corps Members. Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in meaningful dialogues, shared innovative ideas, and discussed strategies to improve the welfare and security of Corps Members. The focus was on creating an environment where Corps Members can not only serve but also thrive, learn, and contribute to their communities.
During the Workshop, the agenda included breakout syndicate sessions, during which participants delved into two critical topics. The first session focused on “Corps Welfare: Steps to Ameliorate Them for Effective Service Delivery,” where in-depth discussions and brainstorming took place on improving the welfare of Corps Members.
The second session addressed “Expectations from Corps Employers in Checking Absenteeism and Truancy Amongst Corps Members,” emphasizing the importance of accountability and discipline. These syndicate sessions allowed for in-depth examination of these crucial aspects of the National Youth Service Corps program, and they provided a platform for participants to share their insights and develop practical solutions.
The workshop aims to foster stronger relationships between employers and Corps Members, ensuring that these young talents have the support and security they need to excel during their service year. It is seen as an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of the young Corps Members and, ultimately, on the future of Nigeria.
The 2023 Corps Members Employers Workshop is expected to lead to practical initiatives and policies that enhance the NYSC program, making it more relevant and beneficial for the youth who serve the nation. It reflects the commitment of the NYSC and its stakeholders to empower young minds and contribute to the development of the nation.
Adding a touch of entertainment to the event, a captivating dance display was featured, providing participants with a moment of enjoyment and cultural appreciation. Moreover, refreshments were served to keep the participants refreshed and energized during the intensive discussions and collaborative sessions. The workshop saw a diverse array of attendees, including representatives from the Lagos State Government, NYSC South West zone staff, NYSC Lagos staff, and, notably, the Corps Members themselves. This diverse representation ensured a comprehensive and well-rounded perspective on the matters at hand.
