The state called on the UN to help establish a forensic laboratory to eliminate the challenge of having to go to Lagos to conduct forensics.
The state police commissioner, Muhammad Dalijan, made this known while hosting the head of the counterterrorism unit at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Thomas Parker.
He called on the United Nations to provide support in enhancing the command’s capabilities in investigation training.
Dalijan said his command had arrested a number of high-profile persons in connection with banditry, which included a current member of the State House of Assembly, a district head, and a former local government chairman.
The police boss explained that the crime rate has reduced considerably in Zamfara State due to the efforts of security agencies, in collaboration with the Community Protection Guard who have been battling suspected terrorists migrating from Borno to Zamfara State.
However, the UNODC counterterrorism unit head, Thomas Parker, on his part, asserted that his team were in Zamfara on the heels of an appeal by Governor Dauda Lawal to the United Nations to assist the state in tackling insecurity.
He informed the police that they were there to conduct an assessment of the security situation to understand the root causes and challenges, and to know the areas where assistance could be offered.
