Residents of Warri South and Uvwie Local Government Areas are currently grappling with acute scarcity of sachet water, popularly known as “pure water,” following a three-day strike action embarked upon by producers in the area.
The development was disclosed to our correspondent by a driver of a sachet water distribution van in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, during a media chat over the weekend. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the strike commenced on Friday, May 1, 2026, and is expected to be called off on Monday, May 4, 2026.
According to the source, the industrial action was necessitated by the escalating cost of production, including increases in the prices of nylon materials, fuel, electricity, and other operational inputs. He further hinted that consumers should brace for a price increase once production resumes.
The strike has compounded the already difficult living conditions faced by residents, particularly low-income earners who rely heavily on sachet water as an affordable source of potable water. With inflationary pressures continuing to erode purchasing power, the scarcity and anticipated price hike are expected to worsen the hardship experienced by the common man.
To mitigate the situation and prevent a recurrence, stakeholders have called for urgent government intervention including but not limited to; Stabilization of fuel and energy costs to reduce operational expenses; Strengthening of public water supply systems to reduce overdependence on sachet water; Engagement between government, producers, and consumer protection agencies to ensure fair pricing.
Without prompt and coordinated action, the recurring disruptions in sachet water supply may continue to pose significant public health and economic challenges in the affected areas.
