Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (D-SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), on Monday August 3, 2026 flagged off its Climate Change and School Greening Curriculum initiative with a sensitisation programme and tree-planting exercise at Oharisi Primary School, Ughelli.
The programme, themed “Enhancing the Implementation of Climate Change and Greening Curriculum,” is aimed at promoting environmental consciousness in schools through practical actions that encourage climate change education and sustainable environmental practices.
Representing the Executive Chairman of Delta SUBEB, Hon. Samuel Mariere, the Education Secretary of Ughelli North Local Government Education Authority (LGEA), Mr. Pius Omubaye, said the major focus of the programme was to reduce environmental pollution, introduce climate change initiatives in school curriculum and revive the culture of tree planting.
He observed that many people no longer plant trees despite their importance in producing oxygen, conserving water, reducing soil erosion, and maintaining ecological balance.
He therefore urged participants to shun activities that degrade the environment and embrace the practice of replacing every tree felled with new ones.
Mr. Omubaye further encouraged teachers, headteachers, School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) members, and other stakeholders to become ambassadors of environmental conservation by promoting tree planting and other eco-friendly practices in their schools and communities.
He also called for a return to the nation’s traditional values of protecting trees and preserving the environment for future generations.
Also speaking, the Director of Special Programmes, Mrs. Sandra Ogini, commended the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his unwavering commitment to advancing quality basic education and promoting sustainable environmental practices in line with the M.O.R.E. Agenda.
She further appreciated the Executive Chairman of Delta SUBEB, for his visionary leadership and unwavering support for programmes that continue to strengthen basic education in the State.
The director said the initiative was designed to raise awareness about climate change and equip schools with the knowledge and practical skills needed to establish and sustain greener, cleaner, and healthier learning environments.
The sensitisation session was facilitated by a Rural Sociologist and Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, Faculty of Agriculture, Dennis Osadebe University, Asaba, Dr. Babalola Adeniyi, who educated participants on the causes and effects of climate change, environmental conservation, and sustainable practices for mitigating its impact.
A major highlight of the event was the ceremonial tree-planting exercise, underscoring the commitment of D-SUBEB and UBEC to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship in schools across Delta State.
The event was attended by Directors of Delta SUBEB, Education Secretaries from the 25 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) members, headteachers, teachers, and other stakeholders in the basic education sector.
The sensitisation and tree-planting exercise marked the opening of the three-day Climate Change and Greening Curriculum capacity building workshop, for 100 education managers drawn from the 25 Local Government Areas of the State which will continue on August 4 and 5, 2026, at Gares Place Hotel, Ughelli.
