The Delta State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing people-centred policies and programmes aimed at improving the economic well-being and social welfare of residents across the state.
The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, stated this during a press briefing in Asaba, where he outlined the administration’s deliberate efforts to ensure that the benefits of governance are felt directly by citizens as the 2027 general elections approach and beyond.
According to the Commissioner, the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has rolled out a series of strategic initiatives and will continue to introduce programmes designed to strengthen the purchasing power of residents, stimulate economic growth and enhance their quality of life.
Aniagwu noted that Delta State remains financially stable and solvent, enabling the government to implement policies that positively impact citizens without creating inflationary pressures. He explained that the administration’s economic strategy is focused on ensuring that the gains of government policies are reflected in the daily lives of individuals, families and communities across the state.
The Commissioner disclosed that the state government has embarked on the massive renovation and rehabilitation of public schools, describing the initiative as one that will not only improve learning conditions for students but also create employment opportunities and generate income for artisans, contractors, suppliers and other service providers.
He further stated that Governor Oborevwori’s approval of a 13th-month salary for public servants would inject additional resources into the economy, increase disposable income and enhance the purchasing power of workers, thereby stimulating commercial activities across various sectors.
Aniagwu also revealed that the Governor has directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) implementing empowerment programmes to commence processes leading to the disbursement of benefits to intended beneficiaries. According to him, the programmes are expected to improve livelihoods, encourage self-reliance and contribute to poverty reduction.
On infrastructure development, the Commissioner emphasized that the administration’s extensive road construction and rehabilitation projects are opening up economic corridors across the state. He noted that improved road networks would facilitate the movement of agricultural produce from farms to markets, reduce transportation costs, enhance access to rural communities and contribute to food security and economic growth.
Aniagwu also referenced the recent Delta State Economic and Investment Summit, describing it as a strategic platform for attracting investments and expanding economic opportunities. He disclosed that Governor Oborevwori recently visited a major agricultural investment facility in Ughelli focused on hatchery production, noting that such investments have the potential to create jobs, boost food production and strengthen the agricultural value chain.
The Commissioner stressed that recent policies, programmes and approvals by the State Executive Council are part of a deliberate effort to ensure that the state’s resources translate into tangible benefits for residents through sustainable economic opportunities and improved social welfare.
Speaking on national economic reforms, Aniagwu stated that the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government was a necessary decision and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for taking the bold step. While acknowledging challenges associated with the implementation of the policy, he noted that both the Federal Government and the Delta State Government are committed to addressing emerging concerns and ensuring that citizens benefit from ongoing reforms.
He maintained that increased investment, strategic spending and support for productive sectors of the economy would stimulate growth, create employment opportunities and improve the standard of living of residents.
Aniagwu therefore called on Deltans to continue supporting the Oborevwori administration, assuring them of the government’s commitment to sustainable development, inclusive growth and shared prosperity across the state.
