Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has urged Deltans to take a greater interest in the 2027 General Elections, stressing that voter registration and active participation are essential to determining who governs the state.
Aniagwu made the call while featuring as a guest on Political Talk, a programme on DOTT TV, where he discussed the political build-up to the 2027 elections, voter mobilisation, the position of the Delta State Government and recent developments within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Commissioner said efforts to encourage voter registration were not necessarily aimed at securing support for any particular political party, but at ensuring that eligible citizens were registered and able to exercise their constitutional right to vote. “It is their civic responsibility to first get enrolled into the voter register and then be able to exercise their franchise,” he said.
Speaking on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s political position, Aniagwu urged Nigerians to distinguish between the Governor’s responsibilities as the leader of government and his obligations as a member of a political party. He maintained that the Governor’s support for his party’s presidential candidate should be understood within that context.
On the economic reforms of the Federal Government, Aniagwu acknowledged the hardship being experienced by Nigerians, but said the reforms should also be assessed in relation to their intended long-term objectives. He likened the situation to choosing a vehicle that may be uncomfortable but is ultimately capable of taking passengers to their desired destination.
Addressing developments in Delta politics, the Commissioner noted that movement of political actors between parties was not unusual in a democratic system. He maintained that healthy competition within the political space gives citizens alternatives and strengthens their ability to make choices at the polls.
“We don’t want a one-party state,” he said, stressing the importance of maintaining a competitive political environment.
Aniagwu further stated that while political actors would continue preparations ahead of the 2027 elections, the administration of Governor Oborevwori remained focused on governance and the delivery of development projects across the state.
He also highlighted the administration’s economic interventions, infrastructure projects and workers’ welfare measures, noting that such initiatives were aimed at improving the purchasing power of residents, stimulating economic activity and enhancing the overall wellbeing of Deltans.
The Commissioner reiterated that the political process should ultimately provide citizens with the opportunity to make informed choices, urging eligible voters to participate actively rather than remain apathetic to the electoral process.
