Luis Rubiales has stepped down from his positions as President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation and as a Uefa Vice-President.
His decision to resign follows a sexism scandal that has caused controversy in Spain and the football community worldwide.
Rubiales, 46, had faced widespread calls to step down after kissing Spain forward, Jenni Hermoso on the lips in the aftermath of last month’s Women’s World Cup final.
The embattled Rubiales has been suspended by FIFA since August 26, amid ongoing disciplinary and legal proceedings.
Hermoso has said the kiss was not consensual, and the Spanish prosecutor filed a complaint against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion on Friday.
Announcing his resignation in a statement on Sunday, Rubiales said his position had become untenable. Later, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed he had sent a resignation letter to acting president, Pedro Rocha.
Last week, a Spanish prosecutor filed a complaint with the High Court against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion over his kiss on the lips of Hermoso.
Also, his suspension for three months from all football activities by FIFA was pending on an investigation by football’s world governing body into his actions after Spain clinched their World Cup victory against England in Sydney on August 20.
