The Managing Director of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Chief Festus Ochonogor, has disclosed that several completed projects across oil-producing communities in the state are now ready for commissioning, as the Commission begins the next phase of its development agenda.
Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, following a board meeting chaired by the Commission’s Chairman, Chief John Nani, Chief Ochonogor announced that the Commission had successfully completed the compilation of a comprehensive database of all completed and ongoing projects across its mandate areas.
“We have seen some completed projects that are ready for commissioning. The next stage is to work out modalities and proceed with the official commissioning,” he said.
The DESOPADEC boss emphasized the importance of unity among staff and stakeholders, particularly in light of the administration’s recent political realignment.
According to him, organisational harmony is essential to deliver the “More Agenda” and ensure the commission continues to support the broader development goals of the Delta State Government.
“There is a need for harmony and unity of purpose to ensure the commission plays its part in supporting the development agenda, especially in our core mandate areas,” Ochonogor said.
The Commission is also making efforts to strengthen human capital development within its workforce. Ochonogor noted that the management encourages staff to attend professional meetings, including annual general meetings (AGMs), of their professional bodies and is considering hosting internal training sessions, depending on the availability of funds.
Regarding infrastructure financing, the MD commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering support, which he said has greatly improved DESOPADEC’s ability to settle payments to contractors. He, however, appealed for patience from contractors who are yet to be paid.
“It is not possible to pay all contractors at once. But we are making steady progress and will continue to liaise with stakeholders to ensure outstanding payments are cleared,” he said.
Ochonogor further disclosed that plans are underway to commence the 2025 DESOPADEC Skills Academy (DSA)
Addressing the needs of students, the MD revealed that a digital portal to handle bursary registrations is being created and a formal launch is scheduled for Thursday, 8th May.
“We are finalising the necessary arrangements. Once the portal is launched, it will allow students to register and access bursary benefits,” he said.
