The Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, on Monday formally received Industrial Training (IT) students from Dennis OsadebayUniversity, Asaba, into the Ministry of Information for a six-month practical training programme aimed at equipping them with hands-on experience in the field of mass communication.
The students were welcomed on behalf of the Commissioner by the Functioning Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Stella Macaulay, who urged them to make the most of the rare opportunity by showing discipline, dedication, and a strong willingness to learn.
Addressing the trainees, Mrs. Macaulay said the programme was designed not only to expose them to the practical side of communication but also to help them discover areas of specialization for future career growth.
“You are here to learn, grow and prepare yourselves for the future. Be on your best behaviour, remain focused, and use this six-month period to decide the department where you may wish to build your professional career,” she said.
She further conveyed the Commissioner’s assurance that the students would be given access to the ministry’s eight departments to ensure they gain broad knowledge and practical experience across the communication sector.
According to her, the exposure would help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world professional practice.
Also speaking, the Director of Field Publicity, Mr. Salvation Ogono, welcomed the students and charged them to take full advantage of the training opportunity to sharpen the knowledge already acquired in the classroom.
“This is a valuable platform for you to improve on what you have been taught in school. Be attentive, ask questions, and take every session seriously,” Ogono advised.
The orientation session featured an intensive introduction to the principles of news writing, delivered by Mr. Giovanni Emephia, who stressed the importance of discipline, precision, and seriousness in media practice.
He told the students that success in communication requires commitment and attention to detail.
“You must approach every training session with seriousness, as though your life depends on it. That is the mindset needed to succeed in this profession,” he said.
Deputy Director of Public Communication, Mr. Omojevwe Jabuoma, also engaged the students in a thought-provoking question-and-answer session focused on national issues and current affairs, testing their awareness, confidence, and analytical abilities.
The interactive exercise created an atmosphere of learning and reflection, while encouraging the trainees to stay informed on events shaping society.
The programme also featured contributions from the Deputy Director in the Department of Field Publicity, Mr. Charles Ojefia, who interacted with the students on the importance of public communication in governance and nation-building.
In a presentation on modern communication trends, Mr. Joelson Wilson introduced the trainees to the growing influence of digital media as a key tool for information dissemination.
He highlighted the relevance of street interviews, podcasts, short-form storytelling, and other emerging media formats in reaching today’s audiences.
“Social media has become one of the most powerful tools for communicating with the public. Young communicators must understand how to use these platforms responsibly and effectively,” he said.
On photography and visual communication, Mr. Donald Monu gave a practical demonstration on camera handling, setup, and the role of quality visuals in modern journalism.
The students expressed excitement and enthusiasm throughout the session, describing the opportunity as a major step toward understanding the practical realities of mass communication.
The orientation marked the beginning of what promises to be a transformative six-month experience for the trainees, as they prepare to build careers in journalism, public relations, broadcasting, digital media, and other communication-related fields.
With the Ministry of Information opening its doors to young talents, the initiative reflects Delta State Government’s continued commitment to youth development, professional mentorship, and capacity building in the media sector.
