The Delta State Police Command has begun strict enforcement of the mandatory Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, following a directive from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
The enforcement, which officially commenced on February 1, 2025, is in line with the provisions of Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Sections 1, 2, and 3 of the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act.
Addressing the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, emphasized that the initiative is aimed at promoting fairness and ensuring financial protection for responsible road users.
“This enforcement is not just about upholding the law but also about ensuring that victims of road accidents are adequately compensated,” CP Olufemi stated. “Driving without insurance is not only illegal but highly irresponsible. It puts both the driver and other road users at financial risk.”
The enforcement follows reports from the Nigeria Insurance Association indicating a decline in the number of insured vehicles in Delta State. Authorities have expressed concerns that many motorists continue to ignore the mandatory insurance policy, leaving accident victims without financial protection.
To address this growing concern, the Delta State Police Command has set up a special enforcement team tasked with identifying uninsured vehicles and ensuring compliance with the law.
Motorists who fail to produce valid third-party insurance risk severe legal consequences, including vehicle impoundment and possible prosecution. The Police Command has urged all vehicle owners to check their policies and ensure they have valid coverage before getting on the road.
“Drivers must always carry proof of valid third-party insurance,” CP Olufemi warned. “Our officers will be conducting regular checks, and defaulters should be prepared to face the law.”
The Police Command is encouraging motorists to prioritize safety and responsibility by obtaining the necessary insurance coverage. Authorities stress that third-party vehicle insurance is designed to protect both drivers and accident victims, providing financial coverage for damages caused to other vehicles, property, or individuals.
“This enforcement exercise is about protecting law-abiding citizens,” CP Olufemi reiterated. “We urge all road users to comply with the law and drive responsibly.”
As the crackdown intensifies, vehicle owners in Delta State are advised to ensure their insurance policies are up to date to avoid sanctions.
