The convener of the Big Antenatal Experience, Nurse Georgina Ebhonu, has urged governments at all levels to prioritize maternal health and ensure the safety of pregnant women.
She made the appeal in Sapele, Delta State, during celebrations marking her 10th anniversary as a midwife.
Ebhonu urged expectant mothers to register for antenatal care early to promote safe pregnancy and childbirth.
She cautioned pregnant women against self-medication and advised them to take prescribed medications strictly according to their doctors’ instructions.
The midwife also warned against consuming herbal concoctions and other unverified remedies often administered by traditional birth attendants (TBA) .
Popularly known as the “Nurse That Sails,” Ebhonu said the initiative aimed to ensure that every pregnant woman delivers a healthy baby without losing her life during childbirth.
She explained that the programme also provided an opportunity to celebrate her decade of service as a midwife.
Ebhonu urged husbands and expectant fathers to provide their pregnant wives with adequate care, love and support throughout pregnancy and after childbirth.
She commended the Delta State Government for its contributions to maternal healthcare, noting that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had subsidized services and made many aspects of maternal care virtually free.
According to her, the state government’s interventions have improved access to maternal healthcare and demonstrated its commitment to strengthening the health sector.
She appreciated all that contributed one way or the other to ensure the success of the program, praying God to continue to bless them and their families.
