The Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, has charged law students in the state to use their platforms to promote good governance, highlight the dividends of democracy and discourage social vices.
Dr. Emu gave the charge when the leadership of the Delta State Law Students Association (DELSA) paid him a courtesy visit at the SSG Complex in Asaba.
The SSG highlighted the achievements of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration, including prudent fiscal management, regular payment of salaries and bursaries, and sustained infrastructure development.
He urged the students to actively engage with contemporary political and social issues, with a view to correcting societal ills, promoting responsible citizenship and contributing to the development of the state.
Dr. Emu also encouraged the students to remain dedicated to their academic pursuits and leverage their legal education to contribute meaningfully to government and society through public enlightenment and sensitisation programmes.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information, Rural Roads and Highways, Honourable Charles Aniagwu, commended the students for their commitment to building a better society and urged them to sustain the initiative.
Also speaking, the Governor’s Private Secretary, Lyna Ochulor (Esq.), and Mrs Uju Monye (Esq.) urged the students to keep abreast of emerging trends in the legal profession, particularly the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance efficiency, competence and professional practice.
Earlier, the Vice President of DELSA, Comrade Patrick Edonwonyi, expressed appreciation to the state government for its consistent payment of bursaries to Delta students and investments in infrastructure across tertiary institutions.
He outlined the Association’s “The Next Generation” initiative, which is designed to sensitize secondary school students and members of the public to the dangers of social vices that could lead to criminal convictions and imprisonment.
Edonwonyi appealed to the state government for support and collaboration in implementing the Association’s proposed projects aimed at preventing social vices, encouraging responsible behaviour and guiding young people towards positive life choices.
