The United States says it is considering imposing new Covid restrictions on Chinese arrivals following the announcement by Beijing that it will open its borders from next month.
In a statement, American officials say the decision became imperative due to a lack of transparency surrounding the virus in China, as cases surge.
“There are mounting concerns in the international community on the ongoing Covid-19 surges in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genomic sequence data,” the statement notes.
Some countries including Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan have rolled out stiffer measures for Chinese travelers.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister’s Spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, has accused western countries and media of manipulating China’s Covid policy adjustments.
Mr Wang called for collaborative efforts to ensure safe cross-border travel, and maintain stability of global industrial supply chains as well as promote economic recovery and growth.
The US still requires international travelers to show evidence of being fully vaccinated on entering into the country.
